We’ll see whether the end of the US’ $800 de minimus rule hurts the US consumer, as some say it will, but in addition to the US governments claim that it has been a vehicle for shipping illegal drugs to the US through international Postal Companies, the $800 deminimus has been a boon to offshore retailers/ etailers ever since it was raised about 10 years ago. I became aware afterwards, however, that some offshore companies abused the system by continuing to charge minimum tax fees on orders destined the US, even though their goods were no longer incurring duty charges here… a boon to their bottom lines, while their countries continued to block access to their markets and competition from US companies by imposing much lower de minimus thresholds, and higher duty rates.
